Massmart gets into the Groceries Game |
| Nov 24 2010 |
Massmart for years sold groceries from its Game outlets but the offering has been limited. Now the retailer has launched a pilot grocery store within a Game outlet (in Goodwood, Cape Town) and this time is selling fresh groceries as well, such as Fruit and vegetables. Massmart is planning a second outlet, this time in its Canal Walk store, with opening set for December. It is pitching its grocery offering at a higher demographic than that utilising its Cambridge food chain which caters more for commuter consumer at taxi ranks. Massmart is at pains to point out that planning for this operation started long before there was talk of Wal-Mart making a bid for the group. On the other hand, a successful grocery operation in Game could prove to be an attractive model for Wal-Mart.
