Leading supermarket Sainsbury’s is this week trialling the use of a new high tech trolley that contains an iPad holder and speakers, and allows shoppers to tune into Sky Sports News via a Sky Go app.

The new trolleys also boast a front bumper complete with a sensor, which lets off a warning sound if its gets too close to another shopper.

Broadcaster Sky has chosen today, Premier League transfer deadline day, to show off the service in one of its west London stores to emphasise how easily people can keep up to date with the latest news by using this service.

Ian Burgess from Setwo Designs, creator of the Sky Go trolley, said: “Being able to create a gadget that is practical yet innovative is often a challenge but I think with the Sky Go trolley we’ve cracked it.

“The trolley can be used in the traditional way for shopping yet streams the latest sports news on Sky easily.”

Hundreds of football transfers are expected to take place today as clubs across the UK battle to finalise their squads for the next few months ahead of the midnight deadline.

Already today Liverpool’s Joe Cole has joined French club Lille and West Ham United’s Scott Parker has moved to Tottenham Hotspur, and as Sky’s marketing department points out supporters of these clubs would have been kept in the loop regarding these developments even if they were out shopping at Sainsbury’s.

Holly Knill, Head of Sky Go, commented: “The transfer deadline window is a perfect example of when sports fans want to be kept up to date with the latest sports news whenever and wherever they are.

“We have been able to respond to this consumer demand by working with Sainsbury’s to create a prototype that allows sports fans to never miss a minute of the latest news from Sky Sports via the Sky Go app.”

The trolleys also contain an onboard battery with self-charging solar panel, ensuring the viewing device never runs on empty.

Sky’s app allows customers to watch all Sky Sports channels, as well as ESPN and Sky News, on laptop, PC, iPad and iPhone.
