Pick n Pay walked away with the Overall Grocery Shopping Award at The Times and Sowetan 2009 Retail Awards last week. The awards, which are in their second year, have broadened their scope to go beyond Gauteng and become a national survey. The four key retail attributes of quality, range, service and value into were taken into account.

Pick ‘n Pay was crowned the winner by virtue of its exceptional scores for quality, range and service, while Shoprite took the second spot for a much-better-than-average score for good value. Checkers was third and Woolworths fourth for their image of very high quality offering.

“The retail sector is particularly feeling the pinch in the current recession and therefore, we felt it was critical to expand the survey and provide over 30 retail categories across the country with valuable insights into how they are ranked by consumers in this fiercely competitive environment,” says Enver Groenewald, Avusa Media GM: advertising revenue and strategic communications.

KFC, Edgars and Shoprite took top honours in the Grand Prix category. According to Karin Du Chenne of TNS Research, KFC was no surprise. The KFC marketing officer says its brand success is based on painstakingly well-researched, planned and integrated marketing. Edgars’ secret is said to lie in its consistency. While Shoprite may be a surprise, the innovative manner in which the brand has been able to reinvent itself over the years has helped to keep it at the forefront of consumer brand awareness. Also, Shoprite has entered into the mass market with a degree of commitment that is reflected in the profile its brand has achieved.
